A network is a system in which individual computers are connected together so that they can communicate.
Computers connected in the same department or building are called a Local Area Network (LAN). When computers in different cities are connected, it's called a Wide Area Network (WAN). Computers systems around the world are joined into a giant information pool called the Internet.
Networks offer many features which would be impossible if the computers were not connected.
Electronic mail (email) can be sent from one computer user to another, across the building or around the world.
Information entered on one computer can then be sent to another central computer for access by any authorized user. For example, the same list of Sales Contacts could be viewed and updated by any salesperson from his or her computer.
Networks also save money - one or two printers can be shared by an entire department, eliminating the need for a separate printer for each staff member.
A single Internet connection can be shared by all employees.
A network is a finely tuned machine. A problem with one computer can easily spill over to others. Proper network design is critical to an efficient and cost-effective information system. As your business changes, your network must adapt.

A network can be composed of several components:
A server is a powerful computer which serves a particular
purpose, such as a post office for company email.
Computers on each employee's desk are typically
called desktops or clients.
Each computer has a network adapter, which
connects it to the network.
Networks usually contain one or more hubs or switches.
These act as central communication points for a group of computers. Special
wires (usually running through the walls like telephone wiring) connect the
network adapter of each computer to its hub or switch.
If a local network needs to connect to another network, or the Internet, a
router is usually used. For security, a firewall may act as a guard
house to protect the local network from outside attacks.
A recent advance, wireless networking, is a technology
similar to portable or cellular phones. It allows computers (or
other devices) to communicate with the rest of the network without
wires. Laptops (book-sized portable computers) and Personal Digital
Assistants (handheld special-purpose computers) can be used on the go. Many
public venues, such as coffee shops, now have hotspots. These are areas
in which portable computer users can connect to the Internet wirelessly and surf
or get email.
